Even as they pay respect to the impressions inherent to individual colors, painters have long made free and innovative use of color as a tool for expression. In this exhibition, we will showcase several creative and beautiful works by painters who, after much trial and error, arrived at unique colors of their own.
SHIHODO GALLERY Taipei Office will be opened in October, 2019. In Taipei, we will introduce modern and contemporary art as well as Osaka and Ginza, and offer wide variety of ways to enjoy art works while proposing high-quality works that will remain in history. Meanwhile, we will explore the position of Japanese contemporary art in Asian art history by finding the interrelationships and influences of each other, similarities and differences of the works.
SHIHODO GALLERY Taipei Office (open on 24th September)
Our contemporary art exhibit will consist of works by artists who are steadily securing their positions in Japan. Their works reflect their dedication to quality, which is rooted in the reverence towards the accumulation of modern history, and is apparent in their conscious placement and meaningful contextualization within art history. For our modern art exhibit, we will show outstanding pieces by artist with links to Taiwan, such as those by Okada Saburosuke. Through this exhibit, we will demonstrate how the foundation of our aesthetics lie in modern art, and will introduce their stories, as well as how to appreciate them.
Yamada’s exhibition at last year’s ART TAIPEI – “Memories of the dining table”. For this year’s ART TAIPEI, the artist continues to paint scenes of his most important theme, the “ in the room”, focusing on the particular period of his adolescence. Through the images of universal meals, regional things, and particular sentimental value, Yamada expresses the personal significance of “room” , as well as memories of “room” that are shared among us. While encouraging dialogue between the similarities and differences of the artist and viewers through these images, Yamada implies the image of the room as a memory device, and suggests the memories and importance of the tender years of personal development.
Memories of the dining table”。

Yamamoto’s collector base has rapidly expanded across Asia from Tokyo to Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, and Singapore. At Art Fair Tokyo in March 2019, his exhibition titled “Golden Life” delighted the crowds with his characteristic style of humorously uncoveing the world we live in through familiar subjects. This exhibition is titled “Golden People”, and offers an approach towards the relationship between currency and people, or alternately gold and people, through images of Taiwan and world-famous individuals.
Chiho Akama’s fascination for shoes means that her creative process surprizingly starts from spinning and dyeing the threads which construct the shoes she makes. Her shoes which take on the forms of crickets and cakes are a joyous sight to the viewer. Her creations, which also demonstrate outstanding refinement in design, transcend being mere shoes, and illustrate the worldview of the artist, whose “heart was captivated by the profundity that shoes embodied” .
