Saburosuke Okada(1869-1939)
The female nude has been a classical motif from ancient times, and has consistently acted as a mirror of socio-geographical affairs of the ages. Being the sensitive motif that it is, the nude is constantly critiqued and reacted to, aptly informing us of immediate socioeconomic landscapes surrounding each subject. This particular trait of the nude enables us to observe each portrait from multiple dimensions.
In depicting his female nude, Saburosuke Okada incorporated a classical Western motif using Western techniques, but at the same time achieved the expression of an essentially Eastern -Japanese- nude, painted by a Japanese, celebrating Japanese aesthetics. With this in mind, we invite you to journey through time and space to enjoy the heritage of Saburosuke’s nude.

Overall, his art career showed an unusually smooth progression. Okada’s painting subjects included both landscapes and portraits, and he was especially good at painting portraits of women. Under his brush, women were portrayed with warm skin textures, elegant features, and delicate traits.
Harnessing classical Renaissance technique, Yamada has continuously created paintings of familiar objects which are expressed with a nostalgic, serene presence. Following rigorous exhibitions nationally and worldwide, Yamada has returned to his native Hokkaido where he enjoys a fulfilling life of artistic creation at his newly arranged atelier. From there we would like to introduce to you a new chapter of his artwork of the serenely familiar.

With his unique employment of techniques such as frottage, Yamamoto’s creations are an amalgam of serious themes and humor. For this exhibition, he introduces the official American national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” -well known for appearing on American dollar notes and coins- as a starting point of discussion.
Currencies stand on top of an almost religious faith in people’s trust and imagination. With that in mind, Yamamoto uses coin frottages to depict subjects such as cryptocurrencies -which have no governmental warrant- and images of “GOD”s such as Christ and Buddha, through which he actively challenges our faith.
